When our founder and head conservator, Trisha Weekes, began bookbinding as a young teenager, she assumed all books were made the same way. While this may seem like a simple misconception, it reflects how similar books can appear at first glance. Most share the same basic components and function in familiar ways.
Yet, over the past 2,000 years, the form of “the book” has continually evolved. While its essential structure has remained consistent, its materials, construction methods, and aesthetics have changed dramatically across time and place.
At Paper Leaf Bindery, we are committed to understanding this history in depth. We study how books were made, the materials used, and the craftsmanship behind them. This knowledge serves three important purposes:
- To teach bookbinding classes that reflect the rich and varied history of the book
- To help identify a book’s time period and origin
- To guide conservation and repair work in a way that honors its historical integrity

We take custom request orders, so if you see something you like or you know of something you want, let’s talk and make you a custom book to love and use!

At Paper Leaf Bindery, bookbinding is both a craft and a source of continual discovery. Our work in hand bookbinding and traditional bookbinding methods brings together separate materials—paper, thread, board, and cloth—into a unified whole. Each book begins as individual parts and becomes something lasting, functional, and meaningful.
Many of the books created in our bindery begin as blank volumes, offering endless potential for those who will one day fill their pages. Whether you are interested in learning bookbinding, preserving a meaningful volume, or owning a handcrafted book, this work connects past craftsmanship with present purpose. Our approach is deeply rooted in an appreciation for the history of the book, with particular inspiration drawn from medieval binding structures, both in practice and in study.
The gallery below highlights a selection of books created along this journey. From time to time, a limited number of finished books are also available for purchase, ready to be filled and made personal by others.
