The challenge of book and paper conservation and repair is that no two items have seen the same damage or wear. Nonetheless, we at Paper Leaf Bindery believe it is important to provide potential clients with some understanding of both starting price estimates and conditions that might increase that price. Here we will discuss some basic starting estimates based on the type of book and material, and then we will discuss some common damage or wear that can cause the price to increase beyond the estimates listed. We also include links to articles we have created to further educate clients on pricing-related matters.
We can typically provide a pricing estimate range once we have images of the item and its damage/wear. If the estimate we provide, after receiving images, is satisfactory, clients can arrange to send or deliver the item for a final estimate before conservation or repairs are made. Remember that even in this final estimate, we may quote a range, as some items might require deconstructing the book completely before all damage can be assessed. Specifically, some damage may be hidden under spines or covers that are not visible in the first inspection.
