Traditional Foil Stamping Class—Dec 5 @ 10 am to 5 pm

In this advanced workshop, you will learn the art of traditional foil stamping using lead type letters—the classic method used to impress titles and decorative text onto leather bindings with precision and brilliance.
This class has limited seating, so early registration is encouraged.
Foil stamping has long been used to add titles to spines and covers, transforming a finished binding into a fully realized volume. Using heated type and foil, letters are pressed into the surfaces of cloth, paper, and leather, adhering cleanly and creating crisp, readable text with lasting durability. Unlike blind tooling, which creates an impression alone, foil stamping introduces contrast and clarity—ideal for titling and structured design.
In this class, students will bring a previously completed full-leather binding to work with. Appropriate structures include:
- Full-Leather Single Cord Binding
- Medieval Miniature Full-Leather Binding
- Rebind Your Favorite Paperback to Hardback Cloth/Half-Leather/Full-Leather
- Any structurally sound binding suitable for finishing
Under guided instruction, you will:
- Set and align lead type letters for accurate spacing
- Understand layout considerations for spine and cover titling
- Control heat and pressure for clean foil adhesion
- Execute professional-quality stamped titles
After learning how to use the equipment and techniques, participants will have time to practice with it during open bindery time in the afternoon. By the end of the workshop, your binding will carry a clean, historically rooted, foil-stamped title—ready for shelf and legacy alike.
