Discover the origins of medieval bookbinding in this hands-on course that introduces the historic sewing structures used from Late Antiquity through the Gothic period. Participants will explore several double-cord sewing methods that formed the foundation of early codex construction, beginning with Romanesque bindings around 500 AD, through the refined Carolingian techniques of the 8th–10th centuries, and culminating in the elaborate Gothic styles of the 10th–15th centuries.

This course emphasizes historical accuracy and craftsmanship. Students will study and recreate traditional sewing patterns used to secure folded gatherings (quires) onto double supports—typically linen or leather cords—anchoring the spine and shaping the book’s structural integrity. Each method reflects the technological and aesthetic evolution of Western bookbinding sewing. This course will emphasize sewing techniques over decorative elements. You will create three small books, each featuring a distinct medieval sewing method.

No prior bookbinding experience is required. By the end of the course, participants will gain a foundational understanding of the historical progression of medieval sewing techniques and their impact on book form, durability, and design.
