Celebrate Chinese New Year with a hands-on introduction to Asian stab bindings, a distinctive style of bookbinding in which folded or stacked pages are secured by decorative sewing along the spine.

In this beginner-friendly class, you will create three books using three different stab-binding variations. Each variation will introduce a different sewing pattern, giving you the opportunity to see how changing the path of the thread can transform both the structure and appearance of the finished book.

Under guided instruction, you will:

• Prepare paper and covers for stab binding
• Measure and lay out sewing-hole patterns
• Punch clean, accurately spaced sewing holes
• Learn the basic sewing sequence used in stab-bound books
• Sew three different binding variations
• Finish and secure the thread neatly
• Learn how these techniques can be adapted for future books and journals

By the end of class, you’ll have three finished books that demonstrate how a simple binding structure can produce remarkably different results through changes in sewing pattern and design.

Beginner

No previous bookbinding experience is required. This class is appropriate for first-time binders as well as those interested in adding stab-binding structures to their bookbinding skills.
